R44 and Drone Test New Collision-Avoidance Technology
A demonstration in San Bernardino paired a Robinson R44 helicopter with a Ponderosa FireSparrow Mk10 drone to test Ciconia’s coordination and collision-avoidance system. The event examined whether crewed and uncrewed aircraft could identify a developing conflict and receive useful guidance before they came dangerously close.
During the demonstration, the system provided the R44 pilot with directions to avoid the drone. It can also command a participating unmanned aircraft to move away when a helicopter approaches. According to Aviation International News, the system is designed to coordinate equipped aircraft without depending on cellular service or satellite communications, which may be limited during wildfire, disaster-response or remote-area operations.
The Robinson R44 is widely used for training, patrol, photography and personal transportation. Its participation gave the test a familiar civil-helicopter platform operating in the same low-altitude environment where commercial drones are becoming more common. That environment can leave pilots little time to detect a small unmanned aircraft visually and decide how to avoid it.
Why it matters
Helicopter pilots often work close to terrain, obstacles and emergency scenes—the same airspace where drones may appear with little warning. A system that helps both aircraft recognize and resolve conflicts could support safer integration, although broader adoption would require compatible equipment, operating standards and further testing.
