U.S. Air Force MH-139A Grey Wolf Reaches Initial Operational Capability
Air Force Global Strike Command has declared initial operational capability (IOC) for the MH-139A Grey Wolf, effective August 10. The milestone begins the aircraft’s operational replacement of the UH-1N Huey in the nuclear-security mission supporting U.S. intercontinental ballistic missile fields. The command announced the decision on August 31.
The first IOC unit is the 40th Helicopter Squadron at Malmstrom Air Force Base, Montana. The Grey Wolf is intended to move security forces and support convoy protection, emergency response and other missions across widely dispersed missile fields. Air Force Global Strike Command says the new twin-engine helicopter is nearly 50 percent faster than the UH-1N, can carry twice as many troops and incorporates improved defensive systems.
The program reached this point after initial operational test and evaluation work by the 550th Helicopter Squadron beginning in January 2025, followed by completion of IOT&E in June 2025. In January 2026, MH-139 crews from the 40th Helicopter Squadron conducted the type’s first operational escort of a Minuteman III missile convoy at Malmstrom. Additional MH-139 fielding is planned as the Air Force continues transitioning from the UH-1N.
Why it matters
IOC gives the Air Force an operational foothold for replacing a helicopter fleet that has supported missile-field security for decades. For rotorcraft operators, the milestone also demonstrates the transition of a military derivative of Leonardo’s commercial AW139 into a demanding nuclear-security role, where range, speed, payload and availability affect response across large, remote operating areas.
