Indian Air Force Seeks Helicopter-Dropped Drone System for Stand-Off Strike and Surveillance

The Indian Air Force has sought industry proposals for Vayu Baan, a helicopter-dropped targeting-drone development effort intended to extend rotary-wing surveillance and strike reach. Reporting on the solicitation describes a small unmanned aircraft released from a helicopter, after which it deploys for autonomous flight while retaining links to airborne and ground control stations.

The reported requirement calls for an autonomous range exceeding 50 kilometers with 30 minutes of endurance, or 80 kilometers with 15 minutes of endurance. It also specifies a minimum 10-kilometer control range from the launch aircraft, real-time telemetry, electro-optical/infrared payload options and operation in GNSS-denied conditions. A strike configuration is reported to require a warhead of at least 500 grams.

The procurement is a development request, not evidence of an operationally fielded weapon. The bid notice identified the work as design and development of a helicopter-dropped targeting drone and set a 12-month completion period after contract effect. No official Indian Air Force or Ministry of Defence announcement confirming a contract award, flight test or service entry was located.

Why it matters

A recoverable helicopter need not cross the same threat envelope as the expendable drone it releases. If developed and integrated successfully, Vayu Baan could give Indian rotary-wing crews a longer-range reconnaissance and precision-engagement option, but its actual performance, platform compatibility and timetable remain unconfirmed.
