U.S. Army begins evaluation of optionally piloted H-60Mx Black Hawk
The U.S. Army has received an H-60Mx Black Hawk modified to operate either with pilots aboard or under autonomous and remote supervision. The aircraft, delivered in March, combines fly-by-wire flight controls with Sikorsky’s MATRIX autonomy suite and is entering Army testing, according to Army and Sikorsky announcements.
The service describes the H-60Mx as an experimental test asset for its Strategic Autonomy Flight Enabler effort. Planned evaluation will examine ground control, autonomous performance in complex mission scenarios and procedures for employing optionally piloted and fully autonomous systems. The Army has not announced an operational fielding decision or a production program for the modified Black Hawk.
AirMed&Rescue’s overview places the H-60Mx in a longer rotorcraft-autonomy progression. Its most substantial operational precedent remains the Marine Corps’ unmanned K-MAX cargo deployment in Afghanistan, where official Marine material says the aircraft flew more than 2,000 sorties and delivered more than 4.4 million pounds of cargo between December 2011 and May 2014.

The H-60Mx moves a full-size Army utility helicopter from demonstrations toward formal military assessment. Its results could shape how the service applies autonomy to contested logistics, hazardous resupply and degraded-visibility operations, while leaving crewed flight available when mission judgment or regulation requires it.
