Belgian Coast Guard Deploys Camcopter S-100 for North Sea Surveillance
Belgium’s Coast Guard deployed a Schiebel Camcopter S-100 vertical-takeoff uncrewed aircraft from the military site at Lombardsijde for North Sea surveillance operations through mid-July. The 2026 deployment was the first time the aircraft operated from Belgian territory under the European Maritime Safety Agency’s Multipurpose Maritime Operation program. Belgian authorities said the operation involved EMSA, the European Fisheries Control Agency and Frontex, with the Netherlands joining Belgium and France in the cooperation.
The rotorcraft UAS was assigned maritime-awareness tasks including detection of pollution, suspicious vessels, fisheries activity and possible irregular cross-Channel movements. Belgian Defense said the S-100 can also support crisis management at sea. The Coast Guard has characterized the system as a means to search broad areas and pass imagery to agencies in real time; these operational benefits remain agency assessments rather than independently measured results.
The deployment illustrates how helicopter-configured UAS are being integrated into European coast-guard missions alongside crewed aircraft and vessels. A longer AirMed&Rescue report places the Belgian operation within wider Arctic, Antarctic and maritime drone activity, but the Belgian S-100 mission is the most directly confirmed rotorcraft development in the report. Separately, Belgium’s Navy conducted Skeldar V-200 uncrewed-helicopter training flights at Ursel in late 2025 as part of preparations for mine-countermeasure operations.
Why it matters
A vertical-lift UAS can extend persistent maritime surveillance without committing a crewed helicopter or patrol vessel to every initial search. For rotorcraft operators, the Belgian mission is a practical example of how remotely piloted helicopters are moving into coast-guard, border-security and environmental-monitoring workflows while retaining the need for crewed assets to conduct interventions and rescues.
