Coast Guard helicopter evacuates injured hiker near Oregon’s Melakwa Lake
Search-and-rescue teams responded September 5 after a hiker fell and was injured on a lava rock butte near Melakwa Lake, north of Highway 242 in east Lane County, Oregon. The Lane County Sheriff’s Office said the call was received shortly after 1 p.m.
Lane County Sheriff Search and Rescue volunteers responded with Eugene Mountain Rescue and Linn County Sheriff Search and Rescue. According to the sheriff’s office, the ground teams located the patient and provided medical assistance while awaiting air support.
The U.S. Coast Guard then dispatched a helicopter that transported the patient to a local hospital for treatment, the sheriff’s office said. Public reporting did not identify the aircraft type, operating unit, patient identity, nature of the injury, or hospital. No condition update was released.
Why it matters
The operation illustrates the role rotary-wing aircraft can play in shortening evacuation time when an injured person is in remote, rugged terrain. It also depended on coordination between volunteer mountain-rescue personnel, county search-and-rescue teams and a federal aviation asset.
